The problematic construction of domestic violence as a “heterosexual gender phenomenon that is primarily physical in nature” has contributed to the marginalization of male victims of domestic violence (Donovan and Hester, 2010:279) and has prevented them from obtaining victim status (Josolyne, 2011). As a result, men receive less recognition than victims in society compared to women, and support services are tailored to the needs of female victims. Relatively little research has been done on the experiences of male victims of family violence, so it is not clear how best to support them. This study takes a qualitative approach to examine the invisibility of male victims in society and to examine the level of services currently available to male victims. The results suggest that: the provision of services to male victims remains inadequate, particularly with respect to shelters; And, perhaps more importantly, there is a lack of awareness that men can also be victims of domestic violence, which discourages male victims from seeking help. The study concludes with a proposal for additional research that would improve the delivery of services to male victims and increase their likelihood of turning to support services.
